Part Twenty-One - Team Effort

Tom studied the black dragon yet living. It was slowly getting itself out of its predicament. Zawkane was attempting to walk over to it, but was too weak and in too much pain. Tom spoke to his two healthy friends, “We must do something.”

“What can we do against a dragon?” Shehleg asked.

“I don’t know, let’s ask Zawkane,” Tom said walking away.

“Tom, don’t be stupid!” Shehleg said trying to catch hold of his shirt but missed. Tom continued his trek towards Zawkane. When he came within ten feet he said, “What can we do to help?”

Zawkane jolted ready to slice at him and Tom backed away slightly. Zawkane’s claw lowered as he said, “Nothing. You are too insignificant to be able to help.”

“I don’t know if that is true or not,” Tom said putting his hand on Zawkane’s right horn. “I do know that you are very weak and won’t last another dragon in battle.”

“You are correct there,” Zawkane said laying his head on the grass. “The best I can hope for is to kill him with my final breath.”

“Then let us help,” Tom said walking into Zawkane’s vision. “We have three good brains. Even if we are small, we can think. Tell us what we need to do to kill that thing,” Tom said pointing behind him. “At least tell us how to help you kill it.”

“Now, there might be something there,” Zawkane said lifting his head up a few inches, his slitted snake-like eyes at equal height to Tom’s. “If you could distract him and get him within twenty feet of me, I could roast him.”

“Now you’re talking!” Tom said beginning to run back to the horses, but Zawkane stopped him.

“Wait. I want you to know. If I don’t live past today, it has been an honor knowing one such as you. You’ve got the heart of honor and the spirit of courage. You will go far if you use those to your advantage.”

Tom bowed, “Thank you. I too am honored to have known you. I would never have guessed creatures such as you could be so kind. I hope to help bring you through this battle in the state that you are now: alive. That goal I will strive my very best to accomplish. You have my word.”

Zawkane smiled. He then looked past Tom and said, “Go now Tom, the other dragon is nearly ready to fight.”

Tom nodded and ran over to Chaphar and Shehleg. He then told them what Zawkane had told him to do. “Are you sure we can?” Shehleg asked.

“If we do it right,” Chaphar answered. “Yes we can.”

“I agree,” Tom added. “How I see it is…”
